About
The Troy Independent news site (paper) is a publication created by selected Troy High School students to provide a means of communication for the entire school community. The Troy Independent’s goal is to cover any subject considered newsworthy by the staff accurately and impartially.
Criticism in the form of editorials, cartoon, reviews, and columns will be written responsibly and will not knowingly misrepresent the facts. The opinions expressed by the authors are not necessarily those of the adviser, administration, or faculty of the Troy School Board.
In using responsible journalism, The Troy Independent refuses to publish any statement that it libelous, in poor taste, obscene, invasive of privacy, or disruptive to the educational process. Any errors discovered after publication will be corrected (in the subsequent issue). To let us know about an error, email thetroyindependent@gmail.com.
The Troy Independent is an open forum, and as such, encourages members of the school community to express their opinions by writing Letters to the Editor. Letters which are signed and do not include inappropriate speech are acceptable for publication. Names will be withheld upon request in cases of personal jeopardy. The Troy Independent reserves the right to edit Letters to the Editor for grammatical issues (and/or length for print editions). Email letters to the editor to thetroyindependent@gmail.com.
The Troy Independent invites non-staff members to submit articles for consideration. However, such articles will only be published if they are of exceptional quality, and the decision will be made by the editorial board.
The editorial board is a leadership body composed of the Editor-in-Chief and the Associate Editor. The board makes decisions concerning major issues in policy and determines what should be published.
Any staff member may write a staff editorial. However, the issues and opinions expressed in these articles must be agreed to by a two-thirds majority of the staff.
Advertisements appearing on (in) The Troy Independent provide a service to area businesses and to The Troy Independent readers. All advertisements must be pre-paid. Advertising or other fund-raising activities help alleviate production costs. Standardized prices for advertising are set. No illegal, libelous, or tasteless advertisements will be published. The Troy Independent is a non-profit news site (paper). Articles online are published every Monday, and printed articles are distributed to second hour teachers and handed out during lunch.
The Troy Independent staff reserves the right to make final decisions regarding material published in The Troy Independent. Troy High School doesn’t engage in the practice of prior review. The Troy Independent staff vows to responsibly uphold the freedoms of speech and the press guaranteed by the Constitution of the USA.
